Most of us are taught to pay attention to what issaid-the words.Words do provide us with some information,but meanings are derived from so many other sources that it would hinder our effectivenessas a partner to a relationship to rely too heavily onwords alone.Words are used to describe only asmall part of the many ideas we associate with any given message.Sometimes we can gain insight into some of those associations if we listen for more than words.We dont always say what we mean or mean what we say.Sometimes our words dont mean anything except Im letting off some steam.I dont really want you to pay close attention to what Im saying.Just pay attention to what Im feeling.Mostly we mean several things at once.A person wanting topurchase a house says to the current owner,This step has to be fixed before Ill buy.Theowner says,Its been like that for years.Actually,the step hasnt been like that for years,but the unspoken message is: I dont want to fix it.We put up with it.Why cant you?The search for a more expansive view of meaning can be developed of examining a message interms of who said it,when it occurred,the related conditions or situation,and how it was said.
When a message occurs can also reveal associated meaning.Let us assume two couples do exactly the same amount of kissing and arguing.But one couple always kisses after anargument and the other couple always argues after a kiss.The ordering of the behaviors maymean a great deal more than the frequency of the behavior.A friends unusually docile behaviormay only be understood by noting that it was preceded by situations that required an abnormalamount of assertiveness.Some responses may be directly linked to a developing pattern ofresponses and defy logic.For example,a person who says No! to a serials of charges likeYoure dumb,Youre lazy,and Youre dishonest,may also say No! and try to justify hisor her response if the next statement is And youre good looking.

December 13,an ordinary day in this special year,doesn’t mean anything much to me.I went to work at 8:30am as usual,prepared for an important official meeting and called several of my business partners.My mind was filled with all of paper work stuff until I saw the calendar on my desk.Oh,no! It’s going to be the year end!
Too many unforgettable things have happened on me that I don’t even know which I should recall first.I joined the government,went to South Africa,Hawaii,interpreted for the vice mayor of the city,met lots of foreign businessmen,divorced with Maggie and decided to leave for where I was in year 2001.
Life is quite sarcastic,because my career journey looks like a big circle.I joined the Labor Bureau as an intern in 1997; I left for Singapore the next year and came home in 2000.I stayed in FX for 4 years and ended up resigned for Maggie (because a couple is not allowed to work in the same dept in FX).Now I came back to government.When I looked back at the road I had been walking on,I saw a big circle!
2005,the governmental events year! I’ve experienced the Korean Week,Japanese Week,the CIEME (China International Equipment Manufacturing Expo),The CEO Forum of the World Top 500 Companies,Shenyang Utilizes Agents to get investment meeting…etc.Now I know I can make my resume more complicated but attractive!
My marriage is considered a total failure this year! I take it as my fate and start to face my new life.It’s really hard,though! Leaving a girl who’d been with me for 5 years is not an easy-to-make decision! The lesson is costly.The wounds,cuts and whatever injures caused by my marriage will be sewed up soon.Anyway,I said farewell to her,and to the year 2005.

The waterfall behind our house at the lower end of Lake Edenwold is a thundering cascade of spring runoff from the melting snows of winter.Its been a three-week drum roll leading up to today,when the cymbal will crash and the earth will arrive at that point in its orbit around the sun where it will be light for as many hours as it will be dark.
Today is really the celestial climax to a prelude whose crescendo has been growing now for a month in the forests and lakes all around us.Beginning in late February and through the month of March on my Saturday morning hikes through the lower Highlands,I have watched spring slowly unfold before my eyes.
A pair of hooded mergansers suddenly appeared on our lake earlier this month and I heard the unmistakable call of a wood duck.Several thousand feet overhead,an enormous,migratory flock of Canada geese undulated like strands of limp black thread suspended against a steel gray sky; their wild honking clearly audible in spite of the flocks altitude.
Just a little more than one week ago,as I came to a place in the woods where the forest suddenly yields to what is a wild flower meadow in the late spring and summer,the bare trees were filled with hundreds of red-winged blackbirds,their cacophonous chatter filling the otherwise still morning air.It was an eerie harbinger of spring,reminiscent of the Alfred Hitchcock movie "The Birds." Later that same afternoon,a small flock of cedar waxwings,another migratory species of songbirds stopped for a rest in a nearby tree only two blocks from our house.
Man has always been fascinated with the arrival of spring.King Solomon weighed in on it when he wrote these words from his "Song" in the Old Testament: "See! The winter is past; the rains are over and gone.Flowers appear on the earth; the season of singing has come,the cooing of doves is heard in our land.The fig tree forms its early fruit; the blossoming vines spread their fragrance."
The arrival of spring has always marked a rebirth of sorts,not just for nature but also for us humans.It is a time of awakening,a time to forget the old and to embrace the new.
For most kids its simply a time when they can play outside longer,riding their new bicycles and skateboards or shooting hoops in driveway basketball courts.For some adults it can be a serious time,a release from the seasonal depression caused by the reduced hours of sunlight during the dark months of winter.
But for most of us,it is a release from the mundane things that after three months have added up to the point where we are all just ready for a change.You know: things like having to wear layers of heavy clothing,white-knuckle drives to work on icy roads,and leaving home mornings in the dark only to drive back home again in darkness later the same afternoon.
The crocus and daffodils will soon start peeking their heads above last years pine bark nuggets and whats left of the winter snow still piled in the beds under the white pines out by the road.
They are yet another prelude to the appearance of more flowers and birds: the warblers and the tanagers that will shortly appear in the trees around my home.
I cant wait to inhale the aromas of things like the warming earth,new mown grass,and fresh piles of damp cedar mulch.And I am looking forward to that first morning when I can sit outside on my deck with a cup of coffee and feel comfortable without having to don a fleece or a heavy woolen shirt.
Whatever your passion in life,take time like the busy King Solomon to pause from it for a moment over the next few weeks and just sit and watch and enjoy the spectacle of spring unfold before your eyes.
And give thanks.
It was supposed to be my first day on job today,cause I was told by one of the leaders from the Foreign Trade & Economy Bureau to get to work at 8:30am this morning.And I did as she told me so.
It was 8:05am when I reached the mansion,which is an old building,built around 1990s’.Seeing nobody in the office,I could only stand at the end of the corridor and take a smoke.It was pretty embarrassing for me cause I only did that when I was a salesman in Singapore.I never like the feeling of waiting for somebody alone! I still remember the old times when I hided myself on the fire-corridors and did nothing but taking cigarettes.That is absolutely the worst way to kill time!
Back to the point,Mr.Liyang,one of the vice directors of the bureau finally approached me and we had a conversation about 10 minutes,regarding on the bureau’s background,duties,privileges,and whatever I concern about.Then I knew I was going to join a really busy bureau,cause I would have lots of work to do everyday.Fortunately,I will still have weekends.And I was told seldom we would work over time.
However,there is one thing that I still worry about.What if the director of the bureau does not allow me to get on board,or he just prolongs the probation period?Even though I have strong confidence on myself these years,I feel a bit nervous,cause I really want to be a member of the bureau.Who knows what the hell I was thinking of.Anyway,I said yes to him and that was a confirmation which proves my joining in the bureau.Then I know I would have a monthly payment no more than RMB2000.And I will get that amount until I retire! Is that terrible?
Mr.Zhang,my ex-boss,told me that I am too young to be a government officer.He said I would have to clean the office,take care of the flowers and get hot water for the leaders everyday.He was afraid that I could not bear it for long in the government.Anyway,I am optimistic on my career life and I know Im gonna make a great difference up there!

I can not cook,despite the fact that Ive been living abroad for years,believe it or not I dont possess any of the following kitchen essentials,neither pan nor knife nor cooking oil.You name it and I definitely do not have it.Dont get the wrong picture though,it has got nothing to do with laziness,I have tried,believe me!
My cooking days started when I first went abroad,with the intensive one month cooking training I had with my parents just before I left home.I cooked with enthusiasm.
Every so often,the people I lived with would all cook some food individually and we would share them together.The comments such as "Delicious!,"Yummy!" had always been the comments for someone elses cooking,whereas mine would be "Hmm..interesting!","Ahh....fascinating" or something along those lines,all alternatives for "I didnt know food could be so tasteless." Bless them!
Just in case you asked,I didnt like my own cooking much myself.Since I was not a fussy eater,as long as I was not in starvation mode,no complaints,but somehow I cooked less,a lot less.The reason for that didnt have much to do with the discouragements I had recieved.The truth was I had never really enjoyed cooking,I mean all the preparation berforehand,the actul cooking itself and the clearing up afterwards,I thought it was a waste of time.Plus in my case,after all that effort just to produce something no one appreciated,including even myself,can you see the point in that?Well,I dont blame you.
When I was living with one of my exes,it didnt take him long to find out I was a terrible cook,but it didnt bother him that much,I mean,come on,with a sexy gorgeous girlfriend like me,who gives a damn about my cooking skills?(That was a joke)
Anyway,there was this one time,his friends came over and it just happened that the day before a girl friend of mine metioned to me how she made popcorn on her own and how easy it all was.Just put in some butter,then add corn and finish with sugar.I could do that! So I gave it a go,but somehow as soon as I put the corn in,a huge amount of smoke came out,it went out of control and within seconds,the fire alarm in the house went off.Well,that was pretty impressive,but not in the way I had planned.
"Damn it Woman! Just keep away from the kitch will you!".,of course my then boyfriend didnt really say that,but thats exactly what I did afterwards,I stayed away from the kitch.(Mind you,I was NOT banned from the kitchen)
A year ago,a friend Ive known for more than ten years came to visit me from across the Atlantic.I had aways liked him since we were in school,as he had to live in my place for 2 weeks.Before he came,the girls I lived with taught me all their specialities,and when he finally came,Surprise! Surprise! I cooked with perfection.(To this day,my cooking performance there still remains a mystery.)
But then I suppose I had changed so much over the years and somehow I was not the girl he had once remembered.So at the end,my cooking was probably the only thing he liked about me.How ironic!
Since then,I gave up cooking compeletely.
Sometimes when I say to people that I cant cook,they would often say "But you are Chinese!",whats that got to do with anything?You know,sometimes I do think its a shame that you cant shoot people for their stupidity.

We’re all enjoying the conveniences and happiness brought by modern technologies.We use telephones and mobile phones to call,emails to write and vehicles to drive; we go to another country by air planes; we see what is happening in the world by TV programs and Internet,and we even watch sports games on live.Nowadays,without these technologies,I can’t imagine what my life could be.
I used to read an article describing the modern lives of human beings.It says we will have many phone numbers if we want to search for one person; we send emails and cell phone messages to our friends in stead of visiting them.More and more people would rather sit in front of a computer than a TV.And we seldom go to libraries to check information now,because the Internet would do all the jobs.
We use digital cameras,scanners,photocopiers,blue teeth technology and digital signals for our cell phones… It seems as if we were living in a real digital world.Actually I guess we are,though.Since we are so developed and advanced,why we are less civilized?
We are easily mad with our broken computers; we fed up with things we don’t like; we call our lovers to say “farewell and good-bye” and we are afraid to face the facts which are cruel and real.We’re led to a trend that there will no more face-to-face communications.I would rather chat with my friends with OICQ and emails these years,instead of seeing them in reality.
I hide myself inside my car so that I can flee away from dirt,air pollutions,robberies,thieves,winds,rains and snows.However,I could not taste the spring rain and the winter snow either.The nature is fleeing away from me too!

The only thing legible on the torn envelope was the return address.I opened the letter and saw that it had been written in 1944 — almost 60 years ago.I read it carefully,hoping to find some clue to the identity of the wallets owner.
It was a "Dear John" letter.The writer,in a delicate script,told the recipient,whose name was Michael,that her mother forbade her to see him again.Nevertheless,she would always love him.It was signed Hannah.
It was a beautiful letter.But there was no way,beyond the name Michael,to identify the owner.Perhaps if I called information the operator could find the phone number for the address shown on the envelope.
"Operator,this is an unusual request.Im trying to find the owner of a wallet I found.Is there any way you could tell me the phone number for an address that was on a letter in the wallet?"
The operator gave me her supervisor,who said there was a phone listed at the address,but that she could not give me the number.However,she would call and explain the situation.Then,if the party wanted to talk,she would connect me.I waited a minute and she came back on the line."I have a woman who will speak with you."
I asked the woman if she knew a Hannah.
"Oh,of course! We bought this house from Hannahs family thirty years ago."
"Would you know where they could be located now?" I asked.
"Hannah had to place her mother in a nursing home years ago.Maybe the home could help you track down the daughter."
The woman gave me the name of the nursing home.I called and found out that Hannahs mother had died.The woman I spoke with gave me an address where she thought Hannah could be reached.
I phoned.The woman who answered explained that Hannah herself was now living in a nursing home.She gave me the number.I called and was told,"Yes,Hannah is with us."
I asked if I could stop by to see her.It was almost 10 p.m.The director said Hannah might be asleep."But if you want to take a chance,maybe shes in the day room watching television."
The director and a guard greeted me at the door of the nursing home.We went up to the third floor and saw the nurse,who told us that Hannah was indeed watching TV.

Many Chinese believe that for China to be strong its trade account must not be in the red.It must have a trade surplus to grow prosperous.So if we look back at 5000 years of Chinese history,it would be surprising that the time China’s trade was in the red was also just when the ‘middle kingdom’ was at its peak during that dynasty.
For example,during Han Dynasty,China ran a trade deficit for centuries with neighboring countries,and it was also the time China became the center of the Asia.Another obvious example is the Tang and Song Dynasty (from 7th century to 11th century),when China was again in a trade deficit with nearly all its neighbors.China was then experiencing shortages of gold,silver or even bronze,but none of this had blocked the red dragon from being the strongest nation at that time.But at the end of Song Dynasty,just decades before the Chinese were invaded and defeated by Mongolians,China became the main exporter in Asia and it was one of the several periods when China was weak.Historians cannot simply conclude this as coincidence.
Recent history tells the same story.The end of 19th century was a nightmare for the ancient nation.Many blamed the trade deficit that resulted from opium trade as the plague which caused the weakness of China’s economy in the late Qing Dynasty.However,if we put opium trade aside,China was still a large exporter in the world while it imported little from the outside world.At some point,China’s trade partners had to use opium as a way to pay for their trade deficit with China.Earlier,in the middle of the 18th century,China could produce enough opium for domestic market and also become an exporter in normal definition,but it didn’t help China to be a stronger nation at all.When China launched its first industrialization campaign,it’s trade soon turned into red again,but this happened during the last struggle of Qing Dynasty in its dying years.
After its opening-up in 1978,China was in the red again for eleven years,with the exception of 1983.The government is implementing of a strategy of stimulating exports initially from China’s opening-up.It is a reasonable policy for a post-communism economy which is lack of an efficient fiancé system and a minimum-required foreign currency reserve.
Since 1990,China has been chalking up trade surplus with the exception of 1993.In 2004,the trade surplus of China amounts to $70 billion,of which $58.6 billion from Sino-US trade.With its expanding of trade surplus,its economic rapid growth continues for decades.At the same time,Chinese factories are famous for dumping cheap goods from advantages of its low-cost labors and poor environment standard.After all,China is developing,much faster than EU,US,Japan or any other major power of the world.There is no doubt that China is regaining its strength and will be a major economic power in the 21st century.
What will China bring to the globalization of economy?Even for a country of 1.2 billion population and 960 square kilometers,there is no unlimited supply of cheap labor or unlimited tolerance of environment pollution.However,the demand of the 1.2 billion population market in a fast-growing economy could be the powerful engine of the global economy in human history.Some of Chinese key officials and scholars has turned to pro-deficit attitude on this debate and more and more people realize that China has no responsibility to supply the world with cheap goods while the living standard of Chinese people are below average level.While those booming Chinese companies have shown their appetites for raw materials on the global market,the extravagance of Chinese wealthy family in cities has given hopes to global manufacturers.
Most of the pressure to grow imports comes from China’s trade partners,especially US and Japan.A strong wind calling for the revaluation of RMB has been blowing since the beginning of 2003,and some even criticize China as an exporter of deflation.At the same time,huge amounts of hot money flow into China despite capital controls that strictly limit money flows into this country.Chinese officials have openly refused to revaluate RMB under pressure and some even say that its a conspiracy to sacrifice China’s economy without bringing benefits to the global economy.But those strong words against the revaluation of RMB were more or less for internal politics.The government then began to boost the imports to ease the pressure on the currency.
Domestically,there are more and more criticisms against the stimulating-export policies,especially the tax reimbursement policy.The tax reimbursement to exporters has aggravated the fiscal deficit of the central government.The government has paid 125 billion RMB and 115 billion RMB for tax reimbursement.This appropriation was far from the amount incurred every year and up to the end of 2003,the tax reimbursement in arrears reached to 340 billion RMB ($41.06 billion).The profit margin rates of many exporters are below the reimbursement rate.As the default of payment accumulated year-by-year,some exporters have fallen into liquidity problem while waiting for the payment of tax reimbursement in arrears.
So China should not be afraid to become red in trade,like it has during many periods of greatness.If the dragon becomes be red for years or even decades,the most foreseeable consequence is that RMB will be an international currency.To support an international currency,China should build ‘a stable macroeconomic environment,an efficient market mechanism and a healthy banking system’ as Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao mentioned as the preconditions for a revaluation of RMB.It is easy to say what’s good but it is difficult to identify the problems and solve them.When the growth is still enough to sustain the system,who will be brave enough to cut the mess behind the rise?China should not be afraid to become red again.

The poor always hate the rich,because they see the rich driving all the luxury cars,living in condominiums,villas and spending money like they are countless.And the poor see the rich always on vocations,always so relaxed and enjoyable.So the poor are jealous and they wonder how can the rich be so rich and the poor are so poor.Well,the poor obviously forget one thing: When the rich are working hard and smart to collect money,the poor are lying somewhere and making complains.
Make your fate and success in control; you can make a difference in the future,unless you want to a poor person,both mentally and physically.

Love conquers everything in human’s world.The more civilized and developed a country is,the more love you will see in there.I saw many charity organizations in Singapore and Canada,and I believe there must be many in other developed countries.There is,however,so few in China.Even though there are some similar organizations in China,I’m afraid they are not doing their jobs.

As Gilbert White, Darwin, and others observed long ago, all species appear to have the innate capacity to increase their numbers from generation to generation. The task for ecologists is to untangle the environmental and biological factors that hold this intrinsic capacity for population growth in check over the long run. The great variety of dynamic behaviors exhibited by different population makes this task more difficult: some populations remain roughly constant from year to year; others exhibit regular cycles of abundance and scarcity; still others vary wildly, with outbreaks and crashes that are in some cases plainly correlated with the weather, and in other cases not.
To impose some order on this kaleidoscope of patterns, one school of thought proposes dividing populations into two groups. These ecologists posit that the relatively steady populations have density-dependent growth parameters; that is, rates of birth, death, and migration which depend strongly on population density. The highly varying populations have density-independent growth parameters, with vital rates buffeted by environmental events; these rates fluctuate in a way that is wholly independent of population density.
This dichotomy has its uses, but it can cause problems if taken too literally. For one thing, no population can be driven entirely by density-independent factors all the time. No matter how severely or unpredictably birth, death, and migration rates may be fluctuating around their long-term averages, if there were no density-dependent effects, the population would, in the long run, either increase or decrease without bound . Put another way, it may be that on average 99 percent of all deaths in a population arise from density-independent causes, and only one percent from factors varying with density. I didnt know the man in front of me that morning. But I did notice that we both walked a little straighter, a little more proudly, as our daughters held our hands. I hope you noticed Beths dress. She looked beautiful in it. Now I know you might think thats a fathers prejudice, but she thinks she looks beautiful in it, and thats whats really important. Did you know we spent a full week searching the shopping malls for just the right dress for that special occasion? She wouldnt show you, but Im sure shed like you to know that she picked that dress because of the way it unfurled as she danced in front of the mirrors in the clothing store. The minute she tried it on, she knew shed found her special dress. I wonder if you noticed. Just a word from you would make that dress all the more wondrous.
Her shoes tell a lot about Beth and a lot about her family. At least theyre worth a minute of your time. Yes, theyre blue shoes with one strap. Solid, well-made shoes, not too stylish, you know the kind. What you dont know is how we argued about getting the kind of shoes she said all the girls would be wearing. We said no to plastic shoes in purple or pink or orange.
Beth was worried that the other kids would laugh at her baby shoes. In the end she tried the solid blue ones on and, with a smile, told us she always did like strap shoes. Thats the first-born, eager to please. Shes like the shoes – solid and reliable. How shed love it if you mentioned those straps.
I hope you quickly notice that Beth is shy. Shell talk her head off when she gets to know you, but youll have to make the first move. Dont mistake her quietness for lack of intelligence. Beth can read any childrens book you put in front of her. She learned reading the way it should be taught. She learned it naturally, snuggled up in her bed with her mother and me reading her stories at naptime, at bedtime and at cuddling times throughout the day. To Beth, books are synonymous with good times and loving family. Please dont change her love of reading by making the learning of it a burdensome chore. It has taken us all her life to instill in her the joy of books and learning.
Once upon a time the colors of the world started to quarrel: all claimed that they were the most important, the most useful, the favorite.

Red could stand it no longer: He shouted out, "I am the ruler of all of you- I am blood- lifes blood! I am the color of danger and of bravery. I am willing to fight for a cause. I bring fire into the blood. Without me, the earth would be as empty as the moon! I am the color of passion and love the red rose, the poinsettia and the poppy."
Purple rose up to his full height: He was very tall and spoke with great pomp:" I am the color of royalty and power. Kings, Chiefs, and Bishops have always chosen me for I am the sign of authority and wisdom. People do not question me they listen and obey"
Finally, Indigo spoke, much more quietly than all the others, but with just as much determination: Think Of Me. I am the color of silence. You hardly notice me, but without me you all become superficial. I represent thought and reflection, twilight and deep water. You need be for balance and contrast, for prayer and inner peace"
And so the color went on boasting, each convinced of his or her own superiority. Their quarreling became louder and louder. Suddenly there was a startling flash of bright lightening- thunder rolled and boomed, Rain started to pour down relentlessly. The colors crouched down in fear, drawing close to one another for comfort. In the midst of the clamor, Rain began to speak, "You foolish colors, fighting amongst yourselves, each trying to dominate the rest. Dont you know that you were each made for a special purpose, unique and different? Join hands with one another and come to me. Doing as they were told ,the color united and joined hands. The rain continued, "From now on, when it rains, each of you will stretch across the sky in a great bow of color as a reminder that you can all live in peace. The rainbow is a sign of hope of tomorrow." And as Whenever a good rain washes the world and a Rainbow appears in the sky let us remember to appreciate one another.
It is well that young men should begin at the beginning and occupy the most subordinate positions. Many of the leading businessmen of Pittsburgh had a serious responsibility thrust upon them at the very threshold of their career. They were introduced to the broom, and spent the first hours of their business lives sweeping out the office. I notice we have janitors and janitresses now in offices, and our young men unfortunately miss that salutary branch of business education. But if by chance the professional sweeper is absent any morning, the boy who has the genius of the future partner in him will not hesitate to try his hand at the broom. It does not hurt the newest comer to sweep out the office if necessary. I was one of those sweepers myself.
Assuming that you have all obtained employment and are fairly started, my advice to you is “aim high”. I would not give a fig for the young man who does not already see himself the partner or the head of an important firm. Do not rest content for a moment in your thoughts as head clerk, or foreman, or general manager in any concern, no matter how extensive. Say to yourself, “My place is at the top.” Be king in your dreams.
And here is the prime condition of success, the great secret: concentrate your energy, thought, and capital exclusively upon the business in which you are engaged. Having begun in one line, resolve to fight it out on that line, to lead in it, adopt every improvement, have the best machinery, and know the most about it.
The concerns which fail are those which have scattered their capital, which means that they have scattered their brains also. They have investments in this, or that, or the other, here there, and everywhere. “Don’t put all your eggs in one basket.” is all wrong. I tell you to “put all your eggs in one basket, and then watch that basket.” Look round you and take notice, men who do that not often fail. It is easy to watch and carry the one basket. It is trying to carry too many baskets that breaks most eggs in this country. He who carries three baskets must put one on his head, which is apt to tumble and trip him up. One fault of the American businessman is lack of concentration.
To summarize what I have said: aim for the highest; never enter a bar room; do not touch liquor, or if at all only at meals; never speculate; never indorse beyond your surplus cash fund; make the firm’s interest yours; break orders always to save owners; concentrate; put all your eggs in one basket, and watch that basket; expenditure always within revenue; lastly, be not impatient, for as Emerson says, “no one can cheat you out of ultimate success but yourselves.”
Three passions, simple but overwhelmingly strong, have governed my life: the longing for love, the search for knowledge, and unbearable pity for the suffering of mankind. The word “winner” and “loser” have many meanings. When we refer to a person as a winner, we do not mean one who makes someone else lose. To us, a winner is one who responds authentically by being credible, trustworthy, responsive, and genuine, both as an individual and as a member of a society.
Winners do not dedicated their lives to a concept of what they imagine they should be; rather, they are themselves and as such do not use their energy putting on a performance, maintaining pretence and manipulating others. They are aware that there is a difference between being loving and acting loving, between being stupid and acting stupid, between being knowledgeable and acting knowledgeable. Winners do not need to hide behind a mask.
Winners are not afraid to do their own thinking and to use their own knowledge. They can separate facts from opinions and don’t pretend to have all the answers. They listen to others, evaluate what they say, but come to their own conclusions. Although winners can admire and respect other people, they are not totally defined, demolished, bound, or awed by them.
Winners do not play “helpless”, nor do they play the blaming game. Instead, they assume responsibility for their own lives. They don’t give others a false authority over them. Winners are their own bosses and know it.
A winner’s timing is right. Winners respond appropriately to the situation. Their responses are related to the message sent and preserve the significance, worth, well-being, and dignity of the people involved. Winners know that for everything there is a season and for every activity a time.
Although winners can freely enjoy themselves, they can also postpone enjoyment, can discipline themselves in the present to enhance their enjoyment in the future. Winners are not afraid to go after what he wants, but they do so in proper ways. Winners do not get their security by controlling others. They do not set themselves up to lose.
A winner cares about the world and its peoples. A winner is not isolated from the general problems of society, but is concerned, compassionate, and committed to improving the quality of life. Even in the face of national and international adversity, a winner’s self-image is not one of a powerless individual. A winner works to make the world a better place.
All of us have read thrilling stories in which the hero had only a limited and specified time to live. Sometimes it was as long as a year, sometimes as short as 24 hours. But always we were interested in discovering just how the doomed hero chose to spend his last days or his last hours. I speak, of course, of free men who have a choice, not condemned criminals whose sphere of activities is strictly delimited.
Such stories set us thinking, wondering what we should do under similar circumstances. What events, what experiences, what associations should we crowd into those last hours as mortal beings, what regrets?
Sometimes I have thought it would be an excellent rule to live each day as if we should die tomorrow. Such an attitude would emphasize sharply the values of life. We should live each day with gentleness, vigor and a keenness of appreciation which are often lost when time stretches before us in the constant panorama of more days and months and years to come. There are those, of course, who would adopt the Epicurean motto of “Eat, drink, and be merry”. But most people would be chastened by the certainty of impending death.
In stories the doomed hero is usually saved at the last minute by some stroke of fortune, but almost always his sense of values is changed. He becomes more appreciative of the meaning of life and its permanent spiritual values. It has often been noted that those who live, or have lived, in the shadow of death bring a mellow sweetness to everything they do.
Most of us, however, take life for granted. We know that one day we must die, but usually we picture that day as far in the future. When we are in buoyant health, death is all but unimaginable. We seldom think of it. The days stretch out in an endless vista. So we go about our petty tasks, hardly aware of our listless attitude toward life.
The same lethargy, I am afraid, characterizes the use of all our faculties and senses. Only the deaf appreciate hearing, only the blind realize the manifold blessings that lie in sight. Particularly does this observation apply to those who have lost sight and hearing in adult life. But those who have never suffered impairment of sight or hearing seldom make the fullest use of these blessed faculties. Their eyes and ears take in all sights and sounds hazily, without concentration and with little appreciation. It is the same old story of not being grateful for what we have until we lose it, of not being conscious of health until we are ill.
I have often thought it would be a blessing if each human being were stricken blind and deaf for a few days at some time during his early adult life. Darkness would make him more appreciative of sight; silence would teach him the joys of sound.
A man may usually be known by the books he reads as well as by the company he keeps; for there is a companionship of books as well as of men; and one should always live in the best company, whether it be of books or of men.
A good book may be among the best of friends. It is the same today that it always was, and it will never change. It is the most patient and cheerful of companions. It does not turn its back upon us in times of adversity or distress. It always receives us with the same kindness; amusing and instructing us in youth, and comforting and consoling us in age.
Men often discover their affinity to each other by the mutual love they have for a book just as two persons sometimes discover a friend by the admiration which both entertain for a third. There is an old proverb, ‘Love me, love my dog.” But there is more wisdom in this:” Love me, love my book.” The book is a truer and higher bond of union. Men can think, feel, and sympathize with each other through their favorite author. They live in him together, and he in them.
A good book is often the best urn of a life enshrining the best that life could think out; for the world of a man’s life is, for the most part, but the world of his thoughts. Thus the best books are treasuries of good words, the golden thoughts, which, remembered and cherished, become our constant companions and comforters.
Books possess an essence of immortality. They are by far the most lasting products of human effort. Temples and statues decay, but books survive. Time is of no account with great thoughts, which are as fresh today as when they first passed through their author’s minds, ages ago. What was then said and thought still speaks to us as vividly as ever from the printed page. The only effect of time have been to sift out the bad products; for nothing in literature can long survive e but what is really good.
Books introduce us into the best society; they bring us into the presence of the greatest minds that have ever lived. We hear what they said and did; we see the as if they were really alive; we sympathize with them, enjoy with them, grieve with them; their experience becomes ours, and we feel as if we were in a measure actors with them in the scenes which they describe.
The great and good do not die, even in this world. Embalmed in books, their spirits walk abroad. The book is a living voice. It is an intellect to which on still listens.
I think that, from a biological standpoint, human life almost reads like a poem. It has its own rhythm and beat, its internal cycles of growth and decay. It begins with innocent childhood, followed by awkward adolescence trying awkwardly to adapt itself to mature society, with its young passions and follies, its ideals and ambitions; then it reaches a manhood of intense activities, profiting from experience and learning more about society and human nature; at middle age, there is a slight easing of tension, a mellowing of character like the ripening of fruit or the mellowing of good wine, and the gradual acquiring of a more tolerant, more cynical and at the same time a kindlier view of life; then In the sunset of our life, the endocrine glands decrease their activity, and if we have a true philosophy of old age and have ordered our life pattern according to it, it is for us the age of peace and security and leisure and contentment; finally, life flickers out and one goes into eternal sleep, never to wake up again.
One should be able to sense the beauty of this rhythm of life, to appreciate, as we do in grand symphonies, its main theme, its strains of conflict and the final resolution. The movements of these cycles are very much the same in a normal life, but the music must be provided by the individual himself. In some souls, the discordant note becomes harsher and harsher and finally overwhelms or submerges the main melody. Sometimes the discordant note gains so much power that the music can no longer go on, and the individual shoots himself with a pistol or jump into a river. But that is because his original leitmotif has been hopelessly over-showed through the lack of a good self-education. Otherwise the normal human life runs to its normal end in kind of dignified movement and procession. There are sometimes in many of us too many staccatos or impetuosos, and because the tempo is wrong, the music is not pleasing to the ear; we might have more of the grand rhythm and majestic tempo o the Ganges, flowing slowly and eternally into the sea.
No one can say that life with childhood, manhood and old age is not a beautiful arrangement; the day has its morning, noon and sunset, and the year has its seasons, and it is good that it is so. There is no good or bad in life, except what is good according to its own season. And if we take this biological view of life and try to live according to the seasons, no one but a conceited fool or an impossible idealist can deny that human life can be lived like a poem. Shakespeare has expressed this idea more graphically in his passage about the seven stages of life, and a good many Chinese writers have said about the same thing. It is curious that Shakespeare was never very religious, or very much concerned with religion. I think this was his greatness; he took human life largely as it was, and intruded himself as little upon the general scheme of things as he did upon the characters of his plays. Shakespeare was like Nature itself, and that is the greatest compliment we can pay to a writer or thinker. He merely lived, observed life and went away.
When I was growing up, I had an old neighbor named Dr. Gibbs. He didn’t look like any doctor I’d ever known. He never yelled at us for playing in his yard. I remember him as someone who was a lot nicer than 1)circumstances warranted.
When Dr. Gibbs wasn’t saving lives, he was planting trees. His house sat on ten acres, and his life’s goal was to make it a forest.
The good doctor had some interesting theories concerning plant 2)husbandry. He came from the “No pain, no gain” school of 3)horticulture. He never watered his new trees, which flew in the face of conventional wisdom. Once I asked why. He said that watering plants spoiled them, and that if you water them, each successive tree generation will grow weaker and weaker. So you have to make things rough for them and 4)weed out the 5)weenie trees early on.
He talked about how watering trees made for shallow roots, and how trees that weren’t watered had to grow deep roots in search of 6)moisture. I took him to mean that deep roots were to be treasured.
So he never watered his trees. He’d plant an oak and, instead of watering it every morning, he’d beat it with a rolled-up newspaper. Smack! Slap! Pow! I asked him why he did that, and he said it was to get the tree’s attention.
Dr. Gibbs 7)went to glory a couple of years after I left home. 8)Every now and again, I walked by his house and looked at the trees that I’d watched him plant some twenty-five years ago. They’re 9)granite strong now. Big and 10)robust. Those trees wake up in the morning and beat their chests and drink their 11)coffee black.
I planted a couple of trees a few years back. Carried water to them for a 12)solid summer. Sprayed them. Prayed over them. The whole nine 13)yards. Two years of 14)coddling has resulted in trees that expect to be 15)waited on hand and foot. Whenever a cold wind blows in, they tremble and chatter their branches. Sissy trees.
Funny things about those trees of Dr. Gibbs’. 16)Adversity and 17)deprivation seemed to benefit them in ways comfort and ease never could.
Every night before I go to bed, I check on my two sons. I stand over them and watch their little bodies, the rising and falling of life within. I often pray for them. Mostly I pray that their lives will be easy. But lately I’ve been thinking that it’s time to change my prayer.
This change has to do with the inevitability of cold winds that hit us at the core. I know my children are going to encounter hardship, and I’m praying they won’t be naive. There’s always a cold wind blowing somewhere.
So I’m changing my prayer. Because life is tough, whether we want it to be or not. Too many times we pray for ease, but that’s a prayer seldom met. What we need to do is pray for roots that reach deep into 18)the Eternal, so when the rains fall and the winds blow, we won’t be 19)swept 20)asunder.

Having read the letter, the father felt relieved and gave it to his daughter with a light heart. The girl also felt quite pleased after she read it carefully, her lad still had a deep love for her. Do you know why? In fact, she felt very sad when she read the letter for the first time. But she read it for a few more times and , at last, she found the key – only every other line should be read, that is the first line, the third, the fifth … and so on to the end.

Once upon a time, a man punished his 5-year-old daughter for using up the family's only roll of expensive gold wrapping paper. Money was tight, and he became even more upset when on Christmas Eve, he saw that the child had pasted the gold paper so as to decorate a shoebox to put under the Christmas tree.
Nevertheless, the next morning the little girl, filled with excitement, brought the gift box to her father and said, "This is for you, Daddy!"
As he opened the box, the father was embarrassed by his earlier overreaction.
But when he opened it, he found it was empty and again his anger flared. "Don't you know, young lady, " he said harshly, "when you give someone a present there's supposed to be something inside the package!"
The little girl looked up at him with tears rolling from her eyes and said: "Daddy, it's not empty. I blew kisses into it until it was all full."
The father was crushed. He fell on his knees and put his arms around his precious little girl. He begged her to forgive him for his unnecessary anger.
An accident took the life of the child only a short time later. It is told that the father kept that little gold box by his bed for all the years of his life. Whenever he was discouraged or faced difficult problems he would open the box, take out an imaginary kiss, and remember the love of this beautiful child who had put it there.
In a very real sense, each of us as human beings have been given an invisible golden box filled with unconditional love and kisses from our children, family, friends and God.
There is no more precious possession anyone could hold.
(三)Happiness Equateswith Fun?
I live in Hollywood. You may think people in such a glamorous, fun-filled place are happier than others. If so, you have some mistaken ideas about the nature of happiness.
Many intelligent people still equate happiness with fun. The truth is that fun and happiness have little or nothing in common. Fun is what we experience during an act. Happiness is what we experience after an act. It is a deeper, more abiding emotion.
Going to an amusement park or ball game, watching a movie or television, are fun activities that help us relax, temporarily forget our problems and maybe even laugh. But they do not bring happiness, because their positive effects end when the fun ends.
I have often thought that if Hollywood stars have a role to play, it is to teach us that happiness has nothing to do with fun. These rich, beautiful inpiduals have constant access to glamorous parties, fancy cars, expensive homes, everything that spells "happiness".
But in memoir after memoir, celebrities reveal the unhappiness hidden beneath all their fun: depression, alcoholism, drug addiction, broken marriages, troubled children, profound loneliness.
The way people cling to the belief that a fun-filled, pain-free life equates happiness actually diminishes their chances of ever attaining real happiness. If fun and pleasure are equated with happiness, then pain must be equated with unhappiness. But, in fact, the opposite is true: More times than not, things that lead to happiness involve some pain.
As a result, many people avoid the very endeavors that are the source of true happiness. They fear the pain inevitably brought by such things as marriage, raising children, professional achievement, religious commitment, civic or charitable work, and self-improvement.
(四)Today is a Gift
Two men, both seriously ill, occupied the same hospital room. One man was allowed to sit up in his bed for an hour each afternoon to help drain the fluid from his lungs. His bed was next to the room‘s only window. The other man had to spend all his time flat on his back. The men talked for hours on end.
They spoke of their wives and families, their homes, their jobs, their involvement in the military service, where they had been on vacation. And every afternoon when the man in the bed by the window could sit up, he would pass the time by describing to his roommate all the things he could see outside the window. The man in the other bed began to live for those one-hour periods where his world would be broadened and enlivened by all the activity and color of the world outside.
The window overlooked a park with a lovely lake. Ducks and swans played on the water while children sailed their model boats. Young lovers walked arm in arm amidst flowers of every color of the rainbow. Grand old trees graced the landscape, and a fine view of the city skyline could be seen in the distance. As the man by the window described all this in exquisite detail, the man on the other side of the room would close his eyes and imagine the picturesque scene.
One warm afternoon the man by the window described a parade passing by. Although the other man couldn‘t hear the band - he could see it in his mind‘s eye as the gentleman by the window portrayed it with descriptive words.
Days and weeks passed. One morning, the day nurse arrived to bring water for their baths only to find the lifeless body of the man by the window, who had died peacefully in his sleep. She was saddened and called the hospital attendants to take the body away.
As soon as it seemed appropriate, the other man asked if he could be moved next to the window. The nurse was happy to make the switch, and after making sure he was comfortable, she left him alone. Slowly and painfully, he propped himself up on one elbow to take his first look at the world outside. Finally, he would have the joy of seeing it for himself. He strained to slowly turn to look out the window beside the bed. It faced a blank wall.
The man asked the nurse what could have compelled his deceased roommate who had described such wonderful things outside this window. The nurse responded that the man was blind and could not even see the wall. She said, "Perhaps he just wanted to encourage you."
(五)Is Packing Important to You?
A young man was getting ready to graduate from college. For many months he had admired a beautiful sports car in a dealer's showroom, and knowing his father could well afford it, he told him that was all he wanted.
As Graduation Day approached, the young man awaited signs that his father had purchased the car. Finally, on the morning of his graduation, his father called him into his private study. His father told him how proud he was to have such a fine son, and told him how much he loved him. He handed his son a beautiful wrapped gift box. Curious, but somewhat disappointed, the young man opened the box and found a lovely, leather-bound Bible, with the young man's name embossed in gold.
Angrily, he raised his voice to his father and said, "With all your money you give me a Bible?" He then stormed out of the house, leaving the Bible.
Many years passed and the young man was very successful in business. He had a beautiful home and a wonderful family, but realizing his father was very old, he thought perhaps he should go to see him. He had not seen him since that graduation day. Before he could make the arrangements, he received a telegram telling him his father had passed away, and willed all of his possessions to his son. He needed to come home immediately and take care of things.
When he arrived at his father's house, sudden sadness and regret filled his heart. He began to search through his father's important papers and saw the still new Bible, just as he had left it years ago.
With tears, he opened the Bible and began to turn the pages. As he was reading, a car key dropped from the back of the Bible. It had a tag with the dealer's name, the same dealer who had the sports car he had desired. On the tag was the date of his graduation, and the words… "PAID IN FULL".
How many times do we miss blessings because they are not packaged as we expected? I trust you enjoyed this. Do not spoil what you have by desiring what you have not; but remember that what you now have was once among the things you only hoped for. Sometimes we don't realize the good fortune we have or we could have because we expect "the packaging" to be different. What may appear as bad fortune may in fact be the door that is just waiting to be opened.
(六)The Baby Eagle
Once upon a time there was a baby eagle living in a nest perched on a cliff overlooking a beautiful valley with waterfalls and streams, trees and lots of little animals, scurrying about enjoying their lives.
The baby eagle liked the nest. It was the only world he had ever known. It was warm and comfortable, had a great view, and even better, he had all the food and love and attention that a great mother eagle could provide. Many times each day the mother would swoop down from the sky and land in the nest and feed the baby eagle delicious morsels of food. She was like a god to him, he had no idea where she came from or how she worked her magic.
The baby eagle was hungry all the time, but the mother eagle would always come just in time with the food and love and attention he craved. The baby eagle grew strong. His vision grew very sharp. He felt good all the time.
Until one day, the mother stopped coming to the nest.
The baby eagle was hungry. "I'm sure to die," said the baby eagle, all the time.
"Very soon, death is coming," he cried, with tears streaming down his face. Over and over. But there was no one there to hear him.
Then one day the mother eagle appeared at the top of the mountain cliff, with a big bowl of delicious food and she looked down at her baby. The baby looked up at the mother and cried "Why did you abandon me? I'm going to die any minute. How could you do this to me?"
The mother said, "Here is some very tasty and nourishing food, all you have to do is come get it."
"Come get it!" said the baby, with much anger. "How?"
The mother flew away.
The baby cried and cried and cried.
A few days later, "I'm going to end it all," he said. "I give up. It is time for me to die."
He didn't know his mother was nearby. She swooped down to the nest with his last meal.
"Eat this, it's your last meal," she said.
The baby cried, but he ate and whined and whined about what a bad mother she was.
"You're a terrible mother," he said. Then she pushed him out of the nest.
He fell.
Head first.
Picked up speed.
Faster and faster.
He screamed. "I'm dying I'm dying," he cried. He picked up more speed.
He looked up at his mother. "How could you do this to me?"
He looked down.
The ground rushed closer, faster and faster. He could visualize his own death so clearly, coming so soon, and cried and whined and complained. "This isn't fair!" he screamed.
Something strange happens.
The air caught behind his arms and they snapped away from his body, with a feeling unlike anything he had ever experienced. He looked down and saw the sky. He wasn't moving towards the ground anymore, his eyes were pointed up at the sun.
"Huh?" he said. "What is going on here!"
"You're flying," his mother said.
"This is fun!" laughed the baby eagle, as he soared and ped and swooped.
"Yes it is!" said the mother.
"Leave him alone" I yelled as I walked out of the orphanage gate and saw several of the Spring Park School bullies pushing the deaf kid around. I did not know the boy at all but I knew that we were about the same age, because of his size. He lived in the old white house across the street from the orphanage where I lived. I had seen him on his front porch several times doing absolutely nothing, except just sitting there making funny like hand movements.
In the summer time we didn't get much to eat for Sunday supper, except watermelon and then we had to eat it outside behind the dining room so we would not make a mess on the tables inside. About the only time that I would see him was through the high chain-link fence that surrounded the orphanage when we ate our watermelon outside.
The deaf kid started making all kind of hand signals, real fast like. "You are a stupid idiot" said the bigger of the two bullies as he pushed the boy down on the ground. The other bully ran around behind the boy and kicked him as hard as he could in the back. The deaf boy's body started shaking all over and he curled up in a ball trying to shield and hide his face. He looked like he was trying to cry, or something but he just couldn't make any sounds, I don't think.
I ran as fast as I could back through the orphanage gate and into the thick azalea bushes. I uncovered my home-made bow which I had constructed out of bamboo and string. I grabbed four arrows that were also made of bamboo and they had coca cola tops bent around the ends to make real sharp tips. Then I ran back out the gate with an arrow cocked in the bow and I just stood there quiet like, breathing real hard just daring either one of them to kick or touch the boy again.
"You're a dumb freak just like him you big eared creep" said one of the boys as he grabbed his friend and backed off far enough so that the arrow would not hit them. "If you're so brave kick him again now" I said, shaking like a leaf. The bigger of the two bullies ran up and kicked the deaf boy in the middle of his back as hard as he could and then he ran out of arrow range again.
The boy jerked about and then made a sound that I will never forget for as long as I live. It was the sound like a whale makes when it has been harpooned and knows that it is about to die. I fired all four of my arrows at the two bullies as they ran away laughing about what they had done.
I pulled the boy up off the ground and helped him back to his house which was about two blocks down the street from the school building. When we reached his home his sister told me that her brother was deaf but that he was not dumb like the two bullies said. That he was very smart but could not say or hear anything. I told her that he did make a sound when the bully kicked him in the back. She told me that I must be mistaken because all her brother's vocal cords had been removed during an experimental surgery, which had failed.
The boy made one of those hand signs at me as I was about to leave. I asked his sister "if your brother is so smart then why is he doing things like that with his hands?" She told me that he was saying that he loved me with his hands. I didn't say anything back to her at all because I didn't believe her. People can't talk with their hands and everybody knows that. People can only talk with their mouth.
Almost every Sunday for the next year or two I could see the boy through the chain-link fence as we ate watermelon outside behind the dining room, during the summer time. He always made that same funny hand sign at me and I would just wave back at him, not knowing what else to do.
On my very last day in the orphanage I was being chased by the police. They told me that I was being sent off to the Florida School for Boys Reform School, at Marianna so I ran to get away from them. They chased me around the dining room building several times and finally I made a dash for the chain-link fence and tried to climb over in order to escape. I saw the deaf boy sitting there on his porch just looking at me as they pulled me down from the fence and handcuffed me. The boy, now about twelve jumped up and ran across San Diego Road, placed his fingers through the chain-link fence and just stood there looking at us.
They dragged me by my legs, screaming and yelling for more than several hundred yards through the dirt and pine-straw to the waiting police car. All I could hear the entire time was the high pitched sound of that whale being harpooned again. As we pulled away in the police car I saw the deaf boy loosen his grip on the fence and slide very slowly to the ground and lower his head into the leaves and pine straw. That is when I realized that he probably really did love me and he wanted to save me because he thought that I too was making the whale sound.
More than 2400 years ago, the father of medicine, Hyppocrates, first recognized and discribed stroike as the sudden onset of paralysis. Untill recently the modern medicine has has a little power over the desease, but the world of stroke medicine is changging, the new and better theropies are being developed every day. Today, some people who have stroke can walk away fropm the attack with no or few disabilities if they are threated promply. Doctors can finally offer stroke patients and their families the one thing that untill now has been hard to give: Hope.
In ancient tinmes, stroke was called apoplexy, a general term that phyiciant applied to anyone suddenly struck down with paralysis. Because many conditions can lead to suddent paralysis, the term apoplexy did not indicate a specific diagnosis or cause. Physiciants know very little about the cause of the strok and the only astablished theropy was to feed and care foe patient until the attack run its course.
I like the subtle fresh green budding from the branches of the tree -- the herald of spring, ushering in the dawn...
I like the subtle flow of cloud that makes the sky seem even more vast, azure and immense...
I like the subtle wind. In spring, it steals a kiss on my cheek; in autumn, it caresses my face; in summer, it brings in cool sweet smell; in winter, it carries a crisp chilliness...
I like the subtle taste of tea that last long after a sip. The subtle bitter is what it is meant to be...
I like the subtle friendship that does not hold people together. In stead, an occasional greeting spreads our longings far beyond...
I like the subtle longing for a friend, when I sink deeply in a couch, mind wandering in memories of the past...
Love should also be subtle, without enslaving the ones fallen into her arms. Not a bit less nor a bit more...
Subtle friendship is true; subtle greetings are enough; subtle love is tender; subtle longing is deep; subtle wishes come from the bottom of your heart...

Make sure your love is unconditional. Make sure you love people in all kinds of "weather". Or else what is the use if we love a person only when he is good or she is nice? When I need the people most that's when they leave me. All the time. So please, I hope you won't be like that. We always have to consider the other party, your companion's situation and mood. Maybe he's in difficulty right now. That's why his mood is not so sweet.
Maybe she has so much work to do and so many headaches, so she cannot be so darling like usual. That time is the time when we need to show our most noble quality, the way we want ourselves to be.
It's not that if you are sweet to that person then he will love you more. Maybe he will, maybe he won't. But that is not the point to be good and to be noble. To be good, to be noble is for ourselves because we choose to be that way, we want to keep being that way, and we feel good about it. It's not because, "Okay, now he needs me more. If I show more sympathy, then our love will be stronger"; It's not even to be considered.
But most of the time we fail the test. When people are in most difficulty, we just leave them, or we are cold and indifferent. "Oh, you're not nice to me. All right, all right.";"You'll come and need me soon."; Of course they will. When they're in a better mood, when everything goes better, of course they'll come around. But then it's too late. Then it is not love anymore. It's just a need for each other. That's different, because you are used to each other and you need each other sometimes out of habit, out of convenience, out of financial security reasons -- anything. But it's not true love.
True Love Always Prevails
True love is we stick together in "thick and thin";. Especially when it's thin, when it's troublesome. Then we should really bridge over the "troubled water". That's what they say in English. But most of us fail the test, to ourselves, not to our partners. He might leave you, he might stay with you, because you're nice or not nice. But you fail yourself. You leave yourself. You leave the most noble being that you really are. So we should check up on this to our family members or whomever that is beloved and dear to us. Most of the time in critical situations, we just turn our backs and that is no good.
Of course we have our anger, our frustrations, because our partners are not as loving as usual, or whomever that is; but he or she is in a different situation. At that time, she or he is in mental suffering. It's just as bad or even worse than physical suffering. Physical suffering you can take a pill or you can have an injection and it stops or at least temporarily stops, and you feel the effect right away; or at least if people are in physical suffering, everyone sympathizes with them.
But when they are in mental anguish, and we pound them more on that, and we turn our backs and become cold and indifferent, that is even more cruel, even worse. That person will be swimming alone in suffering. And especially they trust us as the next of kin, the next person, the one that they think they can rely on in times of need; and then at that time, we just turn around and are snobbish, because they didn't treat us nice so we just want to revenge. That's not the time. You can revenge later, when he's in better shape. Just slap him.
There was a king who had twelve beautiful daughters. They slept in twelve beds all in one room; and when they went to bed, the doors were shut and locked up; but every morning their shoes were found to be quite worn through as if they had been danced in all night; and yet nobody could find out how it happened, or where they had been.
Then the king made it known to all the land, that if any person could discover the secret, and find out where it was that the princesses danced in the night, he should have the one he liked best for his wife, and should be king after his death; but whoever tried and did not succeed, after three days and nights, should be put to death.
A kings son soon came. He was well entertained, and in the evening was taken to the chamber next to the one where the princesses lay in their twelve beds. There he was to sit and watch where they went to dance; and, in order that nothing might pass without his hearing it, the door of his chamber was left open. But the kings son soon fell asleep; and when he awoke in the morning he found that the princesses had all been dancing, for the soles of their shoes were full of holes. The same thing happened the second and third night: so the king ordered his head to be cut off. After him came several others; but they had all the same luck, and all lost their lives in the same manner.

When he saw the 1000 unfriendly looking dogs staring back at him,he growled at them and was horrified to see 1000 little dogs growling back at him. As he left,he thought to himself,That is a horrible place,and I will never go back there again.
All the faces in the world are mirrors. What kind of reflections do you see in Oh,Mr. Fox,shouted the cat. You and your hundred tricks are left in the lurch. If you been able to climb like I can,you would not have lost your life.

The first in the Olympian crowd sat Zeus himself. He was the overlord of gods and men and the operator of the thunderbolt .Next to him was Hera,his proud and greeneyed queen.Poseidon was ruler of the sea,And Hades,king of the lower world,had no seat in the committee.Apollo was the god of the sun,music and poetry,while his twinsister Artemis was the goddess of the moon and the chase. Athena was the goddess of wisdom and patroness of house holdarts.Hestin,the goddess of the family,represented home life and family happiness.The frightening Ares was the god of war,and the charming Aphrodite the goddess of love and beauty.The god of fire,Hephaestus,was the forger of the thunderbolts of Zeus.The wing footed messenger Hermes was the god of invention and commerce;and the goddess of grains and harvests,Demeter,looked after agriculture and stood for mother ofcivilization.
All the chief gods mentioned above took human forms of incomparable beauty and grace. Often moved by human feelings and desires,they frequently gave way to anger and jealousy.They became involved in ceaseless battles with the world of man. Among themselves at Olympus they plotted and struggled for power.In the human world they experienced competitions and difficulties.They enjoyed earthly friendships and loves.Acrowd of everlasting gods looked and acted in a perfectly human fashion that is what all gods at Olympus actually were.

The gorillas in the valleys in the south often lived together in groups of several tens. They were fond of drinking wine, and even fonder of imitating mans behavior.
People knew very well their habits and often put wine or distillers grains on the roadside together with many straw sandals connected together with ropes.
The gorillas knew this was a trick to lure3 them into traps and cursed:"Humph! Do you think we dont know your tricks? Well never be taken in!"
So they called one another, turned round and left.
But they had already smelled the aroma of the wine, and couldnt bear to part with it. Even after they left, they would turn their heads to look back. When they saw no one there, they would turn back; and after they turned back, they were afraid of being deceived, and left again. After much hesitation5, they finally said to themselves: "Just for a taste of the wine. It wont matter as long as we dont get drunk."
Shortly afterwards, they agreed to come back to drink the wine. When they got drunk, they forgot everything. Every gorilla1 put on the straw sandals and imitated the way man walks.
As a result, they fell down one after another and were all caught alive by people.

Far out in the sea the water is very, very blue. You can see through it like glass. Far down in the water there are beautiful trees and plants. These trees and plants are so far from the top of the water that no one can see them. Fishes go in and out of the trees just like birds. This is the place where the Sea King’s city is.
The Sea King’s wife died many years before, so his old mother looked after him. She loved the Sea King’s six children very much, and they loved their grandmother, too. These six children were beautiful princesses. The youngest princess was the most beautiful: her eyes were as blue as the sea and her body was white like a rose. A Better Tomorrow
People often wonder why historians go to so much trouble to preserve millions of books, documents and records.
Why do we have libraries? What good are these documents and history books? Why do we record and save the actions of men, the negotiations1 of government officials and the events during wars?
We do it because, sometimes, the voice of experience can cause us to stop, look and listen. Sometimes, past records, when understood in the right way, can help us decide what to do and what not to do. If we are ever to create lasting peace, we must seek its origins in human experience and in the records of human history.
From the stories of courage and devotion of men and women, we create the inspirations of youth. History records the suffering, the self-denial2, the devotion, and the heroic deeds of people in the past. These records can help us when we are confused and when we really need peace.
The main purpose of history is to create a better world. History gives a warning to those who promote war, and inspiration to those who seek peace.
In short, history helps us learn. Yesterday’s records can keep us from repeating yesterday’s mistakes. And from the pieces of mosaic4 assembled5 by historians come the great murals6 which represent the progress of mankind.

I do not know who wrote those words, but I have always liked them as a reminder that the future can be anything we want to make it. We can take the mysterious, hazy future and carve out of it anything that we can imagine, just as a sculptor carves a statue from a shapeless stone.
We are all in the position of the farmer. If we plant a good seed, we reap a good harvest. If our seed is poor and full of weeds, we reap a useless crop. If we plant nothing at all, we harvest nothing at all.
I want the future to be better than the past. I don’t want it contaminated by the mistakes and errors with which history is filled. We should all be concerned about the future because that is where we will spend the remainder of our lives.

The servants hearing the strange noise, and imagining the danger of his master, quickly helped him out of the situation and drove out the ass to his stable, with kicks and beatings.
The ass, as he returned to his stall beaten nearly to death, thus cried and said sadly, “I have brought it all on myself! Why could I not have been contented to labor with my companions, and not wish to be idle all the day like that useless little alp-dog”.
Since his horse refused to go forward, a traveler in the state of Song drove it into a stream, then mounted to set off again. Still the horse refused to go, and he punished it once more in the same way.
This happened three times in all. Even the most skillful rider could devise no better means of frightening a horse; but if you are not a rider, simply a bully, your horse will refuse to carry you.

Once upon a time, a man punished his 5-year-old daughter for using up the family's only roll of expensive gold wrapping paper. Whenever he was discouraged or faced difficult problems he would open the box, take out an imaginary kiss, and remember the love of this beautiful child who had put it there.
In a very real sense, each of us as human beings have been given an invisible golden box filled with unconditional love and kisses from our children, family, friends and God.

I live in Hollywood. You may think people in such a glamorous, fun-filled place are happier than others. If so, you have some mistaken ideas about the nature of happiness.
Many intelligent people still equate happiness with fun. The truth is that fun and happiness have little or nothing in common. Fun is what we experience during an act. Happiness is what we experience after an act. It is a deeper, more abiding emotion.
Going to an amusement park or ball game, watching a movie or television, are fun activities that help us relax, temporarily forget our problems and maybe even laugh. But they do not bring happiness, because their positive effects end when the fun ends.
I have often thought that if Hollywood stars have a role to play, it is to teach us that happiness has nothing to do with fun. These rich, beautiful inpiduals have constant access to glamorous parties, fancy cars, expensive homes, everything that spells "happiness".
But in memoir after memoir, celebrities reveal the unhappiness hidden beneath all their fun: depression, alcoholism, drug addiction, broken marriages, troubled children, profound loneliness.
The way people cling to the belief that a fun-filled, pain-free life equates happiness actually diminishes their chances of ever attaining real happiness. If fun and pleasure are equated with happiness, then pain must be equated with unhappiness. But, in fact, the opposite is true: More times than not, things that lead to happiness involve some pain.
As a result, many people avoid the very endeavors that are the source of true happiness. They fear the pain inevitably brought by such things as marriage, raising children, professional achievement, religious commitment, civic or charitable work, and self-improvement.
Two men, both seriously ill, occupied the same hospital room. One man was allowed to sit up in his bed for an hour each afternoon to help drain the fluid from his lungs. His bed was next to the room‘s only window. The other man had to spend all his time flat on his back. The men talked for hours on end.
They spoke of their wives and families, their homes, their jobs, their involvement in the military service, where they had been on vacation. And every afternoon when the man in the bed by the window could sit up, he would pass the time by describing to his roommate all the things he could see outside the window. The man in the other bed began to live for those one-hour periods where his world would be broadened and enlivened by all the activity and color of the world outside.
The window overlooked a park with a lovely lake. Ducks and swans played on the water while children sailed their model boats. Young lovers walked arm in arm amidst flowers of every color of the rainbow. Grand old trees graced the landscape, and a fine view of the city skyline could be seen in the distance. As the man by the window described all this in exquisite detail, the man on the other side of the room would close his eyes and imagine the picturesque scene.
One warm afternoon the man by the window described a parade passing by. Although the other man couldn‘t hear the band - he could see it in his mind‘s eye as the gentleman by the window portrayed it with descriptive words.
Days and weeks passed. One morning, the day nurse arrived to bring water for their baths only to find the lifeless body of the man by the window, who had died peacefully in his sleep. She was saddened and called the hospital attendants to take the body away.
As soon as it seemed appropriate, the other man asked if he could be moved next to the window. The nurse was happy to make the switch, and after making sure he was comfortable, she left him alone. Slowly and painfully, he propped himself up on one elbow to take his first look at the world outside. Finally, he would have the joy of seeing it for himself. He strained to slowly turn to look out the window beside the bed. It faced a blank wall.
The man asked the nurse what could have compelled his deceased roommate who had described such wonderful things outside this window. The nurse responded that the man was blind and could not even see the wall. She said, "Perhaps he just wanted to encourage you."
A young man was getting ready to graduate from college. For many months he had admired a beautiful sports car in a dealer's showroom, and knowing his father could well afford it, he told him that was all he wanted.
As Graduation Day approached, the young man awaited signs that his father had purchased the car. Finally, on the morning of his graduation, his father called him into his private study. His father told him how proud he was to have such a fine son, and told him how much he loved him. He handed his son a beautiful wrapped gift box. Curious, but somewhat disappointed, the young man opened the box and found a lovely, leather-bound Bible, with the young man's name embossed in gold.
Angrily, he raised his voice to his father and said, "With all your money you give me a Bible?" He then stormed out of the house, leaving the Bible.
Many years passed and the young man was very successful in business. He had a beautiful home and a wonderful family, but realizing his father was very old, he thought perhaps he should go to see him. He had not seen him since that graduation day. Before he could make the arrangements, he received a telegram telling him his father had passed away, and willed all of his possessions to his son. He needed to come home immediately and take care of things.
When he arrived at his father's house, sudden sadness and regret filled his heart. He began to search through his father's important papers and saw the still new Bible, just as he had left it years ago.
With tears, he opened the Bible and began to turn the pages. As he was reading, a car key dropped from the back of the Bible. It had a tag with the dealer's name, the same dealer who had the sports car he had desired. On the tag was the date of his graduation, and the words… "PAID IN FULL".
How many times do we miss blessings because they are not packaged as we expected? I trust you enjoyed this. Do not spoil what you have by desiring what you have not; but remember that what you now have was once among the things you only hoped for. Sometimes we don't realize the good fortune we have or we could have because we expect "the packaging" to be different. "Very soon, death is coming," he cried, with tears streaming down his face. Over and over. But there was no one there to hear him.
Then one day the mother eagle appeared at the top of the mountain cliff, with a big bowl of delicious food and she looked down at her baby. The baby looked up at the mother and cried "Why did you abandon me? I'm going to die any minute. How could you do this to me?"
The mother said, "Here is some very tasty and nourishing food, all you have to do is come get it."
"Come get it!" said the baby, with much anger. "How?"
The mother flew away.
The baby cried and cried and cried.
A few days later, "I'm going to end it all," he said. "I give up. It is time for me to die."
He didn't know his mother was nearby. She swooped down to the nest with his last meal.
"Eat this, it's your last meal," she said.
The baby cried, but he ate and whined and whined about what a bad mother she was.
"You're a terrible mother," he said. Then she pushed him out of the nest.

Reading Interests of Senior Middle School Students.
Recently, a survey has been on to find out the reading interests of senior middle school students.
ln this survey, one thousand senior middle school students from ten schools in Hubei Province were interviewd. They were asked which they liked reading most among the four categories of English articles: news, stories, popular science articles and articles about learning methods. The survey shows that more than half of the students like to read news most.
Twenty-six percent of the students say that English stories are their favorite. Only seven percent of the students are most interested in reading articles about learning methods. However, the number of the students who enjoy reading popular science articles doubles that of those who prefer reading articles about learning methods.
In the 21 century, most homes have TVs, videos and DVDs. Most children get information and knowledge from the TVs, videos and DVDs. But I still like reading. I think it is very interesting. It makes me happy and clever. After lunch, I like reading books in the sunshine. Before sleeping, I like reading books and drinking a glass of milk. At the weekend, I always spend a lot of time staying at the library.

语篇的构成单位为段落, 段落的构成单位是句子, 而句子的最终构成单位为语言意义的基本载体单元词汇。从阅读的意义上讲, 意群就是我们平时阅读一篇文章时, 视线每停顿一次, 进入我们视线范围的单词会有多个, 而这些单词的逻辑意义紧密相连, 这种意义紧密相连的多个单词可视为一个意群 (Lanny, 2007) 。意群训练法就是按照对词汇之间意义的紧密及对句子的结构进行拆分的阅读方法, 这样不仅利于阅读速度的提升还可以提高一个人对语篇环境的适应能力。
例句:
A feature that is first becoming popular is that of torque control machining, the torque being calculated from measurements at the spindle drive motor.
如使用意群法对长句进行结构拆分, 可以解构为一个主干结构即“核心意群” (core meaning) :Feature (主语) +Be (系动词) +That (表语) 和三个小意群: (1) a feature that is first becoming popular; (2) is that torque control machining; (3) the torque being calculated from measurements at the spindle drive motor。这样, 句子意思逐渐清晰起来, 而主干结构的划分可以帮助学生在面对一堆长句时能迅速找到主谓宾, 从而掌握句子的框架。随着阅读时间的不断加长以及阅读量的不断加大, 培养学生在阅读时具备一定的自觉意识, 即, 不是象上述的那样有意去给句子划分结构及意群, 不以词汇为单元去挖掘句意, 而是随着阅读视线的不断后移, 句子中的每个意群会自然出现, 之后再对几个意群进行整合, 最后达到对句子的理解。
4 词义理解
专业文章的词汇有其自身的特点, 其词语内涵较为广泛, 词的用法灵活, 具有一词多义、一词多用以及词义概念“外延”、“内缩”等特点, 使得某些词的语义模糊、概念含混, 同一个词在不同的地方会产生不同的意义, 一词多义现象普遍, 应该视具体的语境而定 (谢建平, 2008) 。以下面的句子为例:
Tension is building up.
孤立来看, 这个句子至少有以下几种理解:
A.形势紧张起来。B.电压在增加。
C.张力在增大。D.压力在增强。
“tension”在日常生活中表示“紧张”;在力学中表示“张力”;在电学中表示“电压”;在较早的英语中它还可以表示“蒸汽机的压力” (陶谦曾庆玉, 2008) 。因此在阅读中, 词义的选择和确定很重要, 可以试图从词在句中的搭配关系、文章题材、词类及词在句中的语法功能等方面来确定词义。
在专业文章中还有一种现象比较常见, 即为了避免表达重复而常常采用多种表达形式。如“设备”一词, 分别有“apparatus”“equipment”“machinery”“device”“implement”“instrument”“tool”等英文词汇;在表达使用电火花“切割”工件时, 分别用了“erode”“melt”“remove”“cut”来表示。但对这些词进行学习和概括时可以发现它们之间意义虽相近, 但用法上有不少区别。在实际应用时, 需要视具体语言环境而灵活处理。由于拥有大量的同义词、近义词使得专业文章的语言表达丰富多彩, 有较强的表现力, 在阅读中可以根据上下文积累更多的词汇, 正确把握语义, 增加阅读的乐趣, 并领略到专业文章的美。
在课堂教学中, 教师可采用各种教学活动来吸引学生对阅读专业文章的注意力, 通过对语篇文体、写作方法, 段落、句子和词义等逐层解析进行阅读指导, 培养阅读理解能力。阅读理解专业文章还涉及很多因素, 学生的词汇量尤其专业术语的积累, 系统的语法知识水平, 文章的背景知识了解以及专业知识和能力的掌握等等都会影响文章的阅读理解。无论使用哪一种方法解读文章, 都需要长期不断地多练多读才能行之有效。

一、段落(paragraph)
段落是由组织严谨、逻辑严密、结构紧凑、紧紧围绕一个主题展开的一系列句子组成的一个整体。几乎所有多个句子的书面形式都要组成一个段落。因为段落可以清楚地表明一篇文章所分成的各个小节的起点和结尾。这可以帮助读者看清文章的组织结构从而抓住文章要点。
段落可包含不同的信息。一段文章中可能含有一长串例证,也可能有一个很长的表达中心思想的论述:它可能会描述一个地点、一个人物或一个事件;它也许是对一系列事件的描述,也许是对两个或多个事物的比较或对照分析;作者可能在一段文字中对许多事物进行分类,也可能会论述某些事物的来龙去脉。无论段落包含什么内容,它们都具有一些共同的特征。其中最重要的一条便是:每个段落都只有一个主题或一个主题句。
二、主题句(topic sentence)
一个安排恰当的段落通常是支持一个主题思想,并围绕这一主题思想而展开的。而这一主题思想是由一个叫主题句(topic sentence)的句子来表达出来。主题句通常具有许多重要功能:1.支持、证明文章的主题;2.统领段落内容,组织安排句子顺序;3.给读者提示要讨论的话题并说明讨论进行的方式。读者通常只需读一读段中的前几句就可抓住段落的主题或观点。正因为如此,主题句一般都放在段落的最前面。当然在某些情况下,在主题句前安排一两个承接前一段落的过渡句或提供背景信息的句子,会使主题的表达更有效、更显著。
尽管绝大多数段落需要有主题句,但也有在一个段落里不需要主题句的情况。例如,作者在前一段中已经明确地提出了一个主题而本段只是通过进一步陈述一些事件来支持前面所提的主题,或者在本段中所有句子和细节都是明显地(也许并不是直接地)表达某一主题时,就无需再有一个主题句了。
三、段落结构(paragraph structure)
在一篇文章中,每个段落大体上包括三个部分:引言(introduction)、正文(body)和结语(conclusion)。无论是在叙说、描述、比较、对照还是分析信息的段落中,这一框架是普遍的、共有的。而且段落中的各个部分在作者与读者之间的信息交流过程中起着各自不同的作用。
1.引言(Introduction):出现在段落的最前面。这一部分通常含有一个主题句,同时也包括一些提供背景信息的句子或承上启下的过渡句。
2.正文(Body):继主题句之后出现,主要用来讨论中心思想,提供事实依据、举例、论证、分析或呈现其它细节信息。
3.结论(Conclusion ):是段落中的结束部分。主要是作者用来总结该段文章中作者所表述的中心思想和主题部分中细节信息之间的关系。
四、逻辑连贯(coherrence)
在一个逻辑严密的段落里,每个子句都与主题句或中心思想密切相关。并且相邻句子之间的衔接和过渡都非常地自然顺畅,也就是说,没有明显的转变和跳跃。一个逻辑严密、结构紧凑的段落能够将新旧信息有机地联系起来并使读者能够很明显地看出段落所表达的思想体系及其展开的形式。
除了过渡自然以外,段落的流畅性和连贯性还与其长度有关。如果一个段落很长,比如长度达正常打印稿的两页之多,那么我们一定要不时地回顾主题句和中心思想,切不可让理解被一些偏离中心的细节所歪曲。
作者通常还运用以下一些技巧和方法来保持段落的流畅和连贯。
1.重复关键词句。特别是在一些对某一重要观点或理论进行解释或下定义时,表达的严密性和前后连贯性更明显。我们从文章的连贯的重复中便不难理解作者所下的定义和描述。
2.认清平行结构。平行结构是作者运用两个或两个以上的使用相同语法结构和词性的句子的一种表达方式。运用平行结构的行文方式在阅读和理解时会更清楚、明了。在相同结构的句子之间我们可以更清楚地看出观点之间的联系。
3.观点、动词时态、人称和数的一致。段落的流畅和连贯还表现在作者使用时态、人称和数及陈述观点时的对应和一致上。
4.注意段落之间和段落中的过渡。过渡性词语着重用于表达段落之间或段落中句子的关系。它们可以帮助读者领会文章作者的思想体系,也能让读者抓住他们很可能会遗漏掉或错误理解的句子间的相互关系。因此,充分认识、了解和掌握一些常用的过渡性词语对我们阅读是必不可少的。
中学生的英语阅读活动是一个相当复杂的心理过程,其中的心理机制和相关因素很多,阅读过程就是一个从字母→词→句子→语篇的有序的自下而上的理解过程。阅读一篇文章的过程不仅仅是对构成该文章的语言的理解过程,而且是一个对文章结构的认识和分析过程,阅读理解不仅受到文章的语言和内容的影响,还要受到文章结构的影响。特定的内容往往需要特定的结构才能被有效地表达。读者在阅读过程中,如果能把握相应的文章结构和段落层次框架,就能够提纲挈领地理解文章的大意以及各段落之间的逻辑关系,从而快速准确地进行阅读,提高阅读效率。

Going to pubs is a very popular leisure-time activity . In a recent survey seven out often adults said they went to pubs, one third of them once a week or more often.

Everywhere there are plenty of pubs, in which people play darts, talk and drink, usually while standing up. It seems that the English think it rather indecent for people to drink alcoholic drinks in any place where they can be seen from outside. So pubs usually not only have no tables outside, but are so built that it is impossible for people outside to see in,or for those who are inside to see out. British drinking habits have changed with larger and continental beers now more popular than traditional fonns of British beer. In cities,wine bars have appeared in competition with pubs. Although, in general,people in Britain now drink more than they used to, new typesof drinks such as alcohol-free beer and wine have appeared and there has been a general move to educate people more about the dangers of drinking too much.
In fact, Clinton made the right decision in holding out for a better WTO deal. A lot more horse trading is needed before a final agreement can be reached. And without the Administration’s goal of a “bullet-proof agreement” that business lobbyists can enthusiastically sell to a Republican Congress, the whole process will end up in partisan acrimony that could harm relations with China for years.
THE HARD PART. Many business lobbyists, while disappointed that the deal was not closed, agree that better terms can still be had. And Treasury Secretary Robert E. Rubin, National Economic Council Director Gene B. Sperling, Commerce Secretary William M. Daley, and top trade negotiator Charlene Barshefsky all advised Clinton that while the Chinese had made a remarkable number of concessions, “we’re not there yet,” according to senior officials.
Negotiating with Zhu over the remaining issues may be the easy part. Although Clinton can signal U.S. approval for China’s entry into the WTO himself, he needs Congress to grant Beijing permanent most-favored-nation status as part of a broad trade accord. And the temptation for meddling on Capital Hill may prove over-whelming. Zhu had barely landed before Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott (R-Miss) declared himself skeptical that China deserved entry into the WTO. And Senators Jesse A. Helms (R-N.C.) and Emest F. Hollings (D-S. C.) promised to introduce a bill requiring congressional approval of any deal.
The hidden message from these three textile-state Southerners: Get more protection for the U. S. clothing industry. Hoping to smooth the way, the Administration tried, but failed, to budge Zhu on textiles. Also left in the lurch: Wall Street, Hollywood, and Detroit. Zhu refused to open up much of the lucrative Chinese securities market and insisted on “cultural” restrictions on American movies and music. He also blocked efforts to allow U. S. auto makers to provide fleet financing.
BIG JOB. Already, business lobbyists are blanketing Capitol Hill to presale any eventual agreement, but what they’ve heard so far isn’t encouraging. Republicans, including Lott, say that “the time just isn’t right” for the deal. Translation: We’re determined to make it look as if Clinton has capitulated to the Chinese and is ignoring human, religious, and labor rights violations; the theft of nuclear-weapons technology; and the sale of missile parts to America’s enemies. Beijing’s fierce critics within the Democratic Party, such as Senator Paul D. Wellstone of Minnesota and House Minority leader Richard A. Gephardt of Missouri, won’t help, either.
Just how tough the lobbying job on Capitol Hill will be become clear on Apr. 20, when Rubin lectured 19chief executives on the need to discipline their Republican allies. With business and the White House still trading charges over who is responsible for the defeat of fast-track trade negotiating legislation in , working together won’t be easy.
And Republicans—with a wink—say that they’ll eventually embrace China’s entry into the WTO as a favor to Corporate America. Though not long before they torture Clinton. But Zhu is out on a limb, and if Congress overdoes the criticism, he may be forced by domestic critics to renege. Business must make this much dear to both its GOP allies and the Whit House: This historic deal is too important to risk losing to any more partisan squabbling

一、预读的定义
何谓预读呢?预读(Prereading)是指读者在细致阅读文章之前对文章的大致内容和结构框架进行熟悉的技巧方法。
二、预读在英语文章阅读中的作用
预读是一项基本的阅读技巧,同时也是一个很容易掌握的方法。在英语测试中,它可以帮助读者理清文章的脉络和框架,迅速寻找到有用的信息,为细致深入的阅读起到良好的铺垫。简单来说,预读的作用可以归结为以下3点:
1. 迅速有效地掌握文章的主旨大意和结构框架。
英语测试中的阅读文多属于说理性文章,其结构大都比较清晰。在细读之前,进行有效的预读可以帮助读者迅速有效地把握文章的结构框架,从而掌握文章的脉络,推断出文章可能涉及的范围,预测正文中可能出现的内容,搞清楚文章的主旨。
2. 便于有针对性地寻找相关信息。
英语测试中,阅读文章的最终目的是准确迅速地找到文后问题的答案。读者通过有效的预读,增强了对文章的整体把握能力,从而在阅读中能够有目的、有重点地关注相关信息,并最终有针对性地找到所需要的信息。这对提高读者阅读的速度和效果,使其在分秒必争的英语阅读测试当中赢得主动权起到了重要作用。
3. 为后面更加深入地细读以及迅速准确地完成阅读问题起到了良好的铺垫。
经过有效预读之后,第二遍对文章较为细致和深入地阅读就显得得心应手。第二遍阅读的速度取决于读者从对该材料的预读中所获得的信息和指导。例如,读者往往能够根据段落的第一句话或者主题句来判断该段落的重要性。若该段落看起来是重要的,那就要仔细地阅读;若根据读者第一次的阅读,这个段落似乎不太重要,那么就可以略读。
然而在实际的英语测试中考生往往忽略了预读,认为预读是浪费时间,使得在阅读一开始就处于一种盲目被动的境地。还没有有效把握文章的大意和框架就进行深入阅读和做阅读问题,很难及时有效地找到要找的信息,很多时候不得不“返工”以重新搞清楚文章的大意和脉络。这不但会影响阅读的效果,更会影响阅读的速度,反而是浪费时间。因此在阅读文章前进行有效的预读是非常必要的。
三、预读英语文章的基本方法
从预读的角度来说,我们可以将所遇到的英语文章分为三类,即有标题文章、无标题文章和新闻体裁文章。下面就围绕这三类文章的预读方法和步骤作一个简单介绍。
首先,预读有标题的文章。预读这一类文章相对较容易,因为文章的标题可以帮助读者了解文章的主旨和大意。预读有标题文章的步骤可以总结为以下5点:
1. 读文章的标题和副标题。
标题一般会表明文章的大主题,而副标题主要会告诉读者文章在大主题下的着眼点、角度和阐述方式。如文章的大主题为:Comprehension Difficulties,文章的副标题可以为:Causes and Cures。又如文章的大主题为:Ancient Greek Education and Its Educators,文章的副标题可以为:Plato and Aristotle。
2. 读文章的引言或首段。
一般议论性文章的引言和首段起到引入文章内容的作用,通过预读文章的引言或首段可以很快地理解文章议论的起点和方向。
3. 读文章中黑体字的小标题。
有些文章中会出现以黑体字形式出现的小标题,这些小标题往往表明文章某一部分的主旨和大致内容,因此预读这些黑体字小标题可以帮助读者迅速掌握文章各个部分的大意,便于理清文章的脉络。
4. 读文章中每段的首句或尾句。
在大多数英语测试的阅读文中,文段的首句和尾句往往会标明文段的主旨和大意。
5. 读文章的最后一段。
文章的最后一段一般包含对文章的总结和概述,通过预读文章的最后一段也可以帮助读者掌握文章的主旨意思。
其次,预读无标题的文章。虽然标题对于读者迅速掌握文章的主旨有很大帮助,但在英语测试中不是所有阅读文章都会有标题出现。由于缺少标题信息,预读无标题的文章要比预读有标题的文章难度大些。预读无标题文章的步骤与预读有标题文章的步骤类似,唯一的区别是要加强预读每一段的首句。因为在英语阅读中,首句又叫Topic Sentence,即主题句,往往要表达出该文段的总体意思,因此在没有文章标题的情况下,通过认真预读每段的首句同样可以把握文章的整体意义。预读无标题文章的步骤可以简单列为以下3点:(1)预读文章引言或首段;(2)预读文章各段的首句;(3)预读文章尾段和总结。
最后,预读新闻类文章。预读对于阅读新闻类的文章非常有帮助,因为新闻类文章结构相对较简单,通过预读可以帮助读者快速地掌握文章的大部分信息,为细致的阅读和完成阅读问题起到很好的铺垫。预读新闻类文章可以总结为3个步骤:(1)预读文章标题。由于新闻体裁的特殊性,新闻标题的作用尤其重要,因为它往往是一篇新闻文章意思的高度浓缩;(2)预读文章的首段。新闻体裁文章的结构属于倒金字塔结构,即开头的内容和信息与文章的主题较紧密而中间和结尾所承载的信息相对较远。新闻体裁文章的首段往往包含的是整篇文章最重要、最主旨性的信息内容,后面的部分主要是细节的描述,文章的末尾则一般是一些新闻背景知识。所以预读新闻体裁文章的首段非常必要;(3)如果文章有副标题和小标题的话,还要认真预读副标题和小标题,以便更进一步把握文章的主旨及整体结构。
我们常说“磨刀不误砍柴功”。通过认真有效地进行预读,可以使我们快速理清文章的主旨脉络、把握文章的主旨思想,这样使我们在获取文章信息的时候更有针对性,使我们更加高效地利用英语测试时宝贵的时间。预读就像一块磨刀石,让我们有一把锐利无比的“钢刀”,准确迅速地切入信息点,从而有效提高阅读文章和完成后面问题的效率和正确率。预读不是一道繁琐没有必要的程序,它使我们在英语阅读测试中赢得了主动性,并为细致阅读作了良好的铺垫,使我们不至于在阅读中常常“不识庐山真面目,只缘身在此山中”。因此,在做英语测试中的阅读文时进行有效的预读是非常有用和必要的。
